Military family reviewing school district map near Naval Base Kitsap Silverdale Washington

Military kids could change schools every 2–3 years. The right district near Naval Base Kitsap can make the difference between a hard year and a great one.

Most families PCSing to Naval Base Kitsap talk about commute time first. Schools come up later — sometimes after a lease is already signed.

That sequencing is worth flipping.

Kitsap County has four main school districts that serve military families near Naval Base Kitsap (Bangor, Bremerton, Keyport, and Manchester): Central Kitsap, North Kitsap, Bremerton, and South Kitsap.

Where you live determines which district you are in. A few streets can put your child in an entirely different school, athletics program, and graduation cohort.

Central Kitsap School District (Silverdale, Bangor area, CKSD)

Central Kitsap is where many military families land. It serves Silverdale, parts of Bremerton, and the corridor around Naval Base Kitsap Bangor.

Nearly half of CKSD’s students have military family ties. The district holds a Purple Star Award, Washington State’s designation for schools that actively support students in transition.

Families can register before they arrive, and the district coordinates directly with the School Liaison Officer at NBK.

If your priority is short commute to Bangor + strong military support systems, this is usually the starting point.

North Kitsap School District (Poulsbo, Keyport, NKSD)

North Kitsap covers Poulsbo, Keyport, and the areas north of Bangor. Over 1,100 students district-wide have military-connected families.

Smaller district. Strong academics. Tight community feel.

If Poulsbo is on your list, this is your district.

One detail that doesn’t show up in most relocation guides:
If you live on Naval Base Kitsap Bangor, you can often choose between Central Kitsap and North Kitsap.

That flexibility matters when you’re comparing neighborhoods just outside the gate.

The Silverdale Costco run and a ~12-minute drive to Bangor are the two benchmarks most Kitsap families use to define “close enough.”

Bremerton School District (PSNS, NBK Bremerton)

Bremerton School District serves families living near Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS) and Naval Base Kitsap Bremerton.

This is often the best fit for families who want:
• The shortest commute to PSNS
• Walkable or close-in neighborhoods
• More established parts of Bremerton

It’s a smaller district with a high percentage of military-connected students and direct proximity to the shipyard.

For families prioritizing time home over time in traffic, this area is worth a serious look.

South Kitsap School District (Port Orchard, Manchester, Gorst corridor)

South Kitsap serves Port Orchard, Manchester, and the areas south of Bremerton — including routes that feed into both NBK Bremerton and Bangor.

This is where many families find:
More home for the money
• Larger lots and newer construction
• A quieter, more spread-out feel

South Kitsap High School is one of the larger high schools in the county, with a wide range of programs and athletics.

The tradeoff is usually commute time, especially through Gorst — which can add 15–20+ minutes depending on traffic and ongoing road work.

For some families, that trade is worth it. For others, it becomes the deciding factor to stay north.

The Line That Changes Everything

What often gets missed:
The Central Kitsap, North Kitsap, and South Kitsap district lines run right through the same corridors military families are searching.

A few blocks — sometimes just one turn — can completely change:
• Your assigned school
• Your child’s peer group
• Your daily routine

The school conversation almost always determines the neighborhood.

Best to have it before you choose the house.

Marilyn and Jason have navigated this decision with military families across multiple duty stations and here in Kitsap County.

The school question comes up in nearly every first call — and it shapes the entire housing search from that point forward.

If you’re getting orders to Naval Base Kitsap and have kids in school…
