Bangor vs. PSNS: Honest Commute Times from Every Kitsap Neighborhood
One of the first questions every military family asks when they get orders to Naval Base Kitsap is: where should we live? And the honest answer is: it depends almost entirely on where you’re working.
Bangor and Bremerton/PSNS are on opposite ends of the county. A neighborhood that’s a 10-minute drive to one can be 45 minutes to the other. Here’s a straight breakdown.
A Note on Kitsap Geography
Kitsap County is a peninsula — water on three sides. Traffic funnels through a small number of corridors, and a few key chokepoints (like Gorst) can dramatically affect your drive at peak hours. The numbers below reflect typical weekday conditions, not best-case Google Maps estimates.
Silverdale
• To Bangor: 15–20 minutes. Sits almost directly between the two bases and leans toward Bangor — one of the best commutes available.
• To PSNS: 25–35 minutes in normal traffic, longer during peak hours heading south.
• Verdict: Excellent for Bangor. Very workable for PSNS. Great all-around location for military families.
Poulsbo
• To Bangor: 10–15 minutes. Some of the shortest commutes to Bangor in the county.
• To PSNS: 35–45 minutes. The drive south adds time, but the route is generally pleasant.
• Verdict: Ideal for Bangor. Harder to justify for a PSNS commute, though many families make it work for the quality of life.
East Bremerton & Manette
• To Bangor: 30–35 minutes heading north against traffic.
• To PSNS: 5–10 minutes. You can almost walk it.
• Verdict: Best location for PSNS. Not ideal for Bangor, though some families split the difference here.
Port Orchard
• To Bangor: 40–55 minutes fighting traffic heading north.
• To PSNS: 15–25 minutes by road, or take the foot ferry to Bremerton.
• Verdict: Works well for PSNS, especially with the ferry. Challenging for Bangor on a daily basis.
Bainbridge Island
• To Bangor: 25–35 minutes through the north end.
• To PSNS: 30–40 minutes by road.
• Verdict: Beautiful, higher price point, works best for Bangor. Less practical for PSNS.
The Bottom Line
Bangor personnel: Poulsbo and Silverdale are your best bets. Bremerton/PSNS personnel: East Bremerton is the obvious choice, with Port Orchard close behind if you can accommodate the traffic times. Split-duty or unsure: Silverdale is the most forgiving all-around location.
